Final Third Development League digest

29 January 2015

The latest round of Final Third Development League fixtures included wins for Doncaster Rovers, Plymouth Argyle and Port Vale.

Final Third Development League - South Division

Portsmouth and AFC Wimbledon remain locked on nine points in the Final Third Development League South Division following their 1-1 draw at Furze Lane on Monday.

Pompey took an early lead after Patrick Agyemang’s cross was turned into his own net by Dons defender Mark Phillips, but the visitors equalised just two minutes from time when David Fitzpatrick converted from the penalty spot.

Final Third Development League - East Division

Mansfield Town remain without a Final Third Development League win this season after they slipped to a 2-1 defeat at Burton Albion.

The Stags found themselves 2-0 down at the break through strikes from Brewers duo Liam Slade and Mirsa Sejdic, but grabbed a consolation in the second half through Simon Heslop.

Final Third Development League - West Division

Wigan Athletic fell to just their second defeat of the season after losing 4-0 away to Shrewsbury Town.

The Latics were on the back foot from the beginning as Shrews forward Scott Vernon slotted home after five minutes, and they made it two on the half-hour mark through Jean-Louis Akpa Akpro.

Shrewsbury continued to pile the misery on Wigan in the second period as goals from Jermaine Grandison and youngster Ethan Jones rounded off a complete display from the hosts.

Wigan's loss meant top spot was up for grabs for Port Vale, providing they could beat Tranmere Rovers, and they did so.

Valliants striker Achille Campion set them on their way with a crisp effort from 20 yards midway through the first period, and he doubled their advantage in the second half.

George Donnelly pulled a goal back for Tranmere in the 85th minute with a close-range finish but Vale held on to move up to the summit of the table.

Final Third Development League Cup - Northern Group B

Doncaster Rovers left it late to register their first Final Third Development League Cup win of the season, with a 2-1 win over Mansfield Town, who were playing their second game in as many days.

An Anthony Dwyer first-half goal had given Mansfield the lead at Rainworth, but a late onslaught from Rovers ensured they took all three points - Joey McCormick and Liam Wakefield found the net in final nine minutes.

Final Third Development League Cup - Southern Group B

Newport County missed the chance to go five points clear at the top of Southern Group B in the Final Third Development League Cup, after they were defeated 2-1 by Plymouth Argyle at Home Park.

Rene Howe gave the Exiles the lead but Marvin Morgan's stunning strike levelled for Plymouth just before the break. Morgan then picked up where he left off in the second half, and grabbed the winning goal to give the Pilgrims their first Cup win of the season.

Final Third Development League Cup - Northern Group C

Hull City secured second place in Northern Group C of the Final Third Development League Cup with an enthralling 3-2 triumph against Scunthorpe United.

The Tigers went ahead midway through the first half after Jonathon Margetts won and scored a penalty, but opposing front man Hakeeb Adelakun brought the away side level shortly after the restart.

It was an action-packed final 20 minutes as Hull re-took the lead through a Charlie Cleminshaw own goal, and Greg Luer made it 3-1 soon after.

Levi Sutton's close-range strike gave the Iron a late lifeline, but Hull held out for victory in their final Cup appearance of the season.
