Final Third Development League digest

22 January 2015

Derby County, Middlesbrough and Newport County all picked up wins this week in the Final Third Development League.

Final Third Development League Cup - North Group B

Derby County knocked Huddersfield Town off the top of Final Third Development League Cup Northern Group B after a 3-0 win at Canalside on Tuesday.

A first-half goal from Alban Bunjaku set the Rams on their way to victory, and Shaquille McDonald made it 2-0 after 54 minutes from a Mason Bennett cross.

Ivan Calero skilfully converted to compile the misery on Huddersfield, and hand the Terriers their first Cup defeat of the campaign.

Final Third Development League Cup - North Group C

Middlesbrough made it four wins from four in the Final Third Development League Cup by beating Scunthorpe United 4-3 in Northern Group C.

Boro got off to a flying start when Bryn Morris’ superbly curled a free-kick over the wall after just three minutes. Scunthorpe then failed to clear their lines 10 minutes later, allowing Morris to score his second of the game.

Kyle Wootton bundled home to put the home side back in the game, but his goal was cancelled out when Yanic Wildschut’s powerful drive found the net, and Bradley Fewster soon made it 4-1.

The Iron pulled another goal back on the stroke of half-time when Hakeeb Adelakun brilliantly found the top corner from the edge of the area, and Deon Burton brought the teams within a single goal of each other at 4-3, but Boro held on to secure qualification to the Northern Semi-Finals.

Final Third Development League Cup - South Group B

Newport County extended their unbeaten run to three games to go top of their Final Third Development League Cup group after a 3-1 over Cheltenham Town.

A Joe Parker strike in the 20th minute put the Exiles ahead, and their lead was consolidated two minutes after half-time when Kieran Parselle fired home. Shaun Jeffers made it 3-0 to the Welsh club in the closing stages, before Joe Hanks netted for Cheltenham from the penalty spot in added time.

Final Third Development League - South Division

AFC Bournemouth climbed to second in the South Division with a convincing 4-1 victory over AFC Wimbledon.

Ben Whitfield opened the Cherries' account after a smart through ball from Josh Carmichael, and Harry Cornick’s lob doubled their lead soon after.

Cornick then grabbed his second of the game when he saw his effort go in off the post, but Dons quickly registered a consolation through Daniel Agyei, before Josh O'Hanlon’s close-range finish made it 4-1 to Bournemouth.
