Final Third Development League digest

26 February 2015

Hartlepool United hit eight past Mansfield Town, and Shrewsbury Town reached the Semi-Finals of the Final Third Development League Cup this week.

Final Third Development League - East Division

Hartlepool United romped to just their second Final Third Development League win of the season when they beat Mansfield Town 8-0 at Billingham.

Jordan Jewson and Brad Walker both netted braces, with Nicky Featherstone, Jack Blackford, Darren Holden and Nat Skidmore completing the rout.

Gateshead beat Scunthorpe United for the second time in nine days thanks to a narrow 3-2 victory at Winterton.

Goals from Carl Finnigan and Matty Briggs put the Heed 2-0 ahead, but Scunthorpe levelled through Connor Purdue and Noel Burdett.

Briggs had the final say, however, netting in stoppage time to seal the points for Gateshead.

Elsewhere in the East Division, Doncaster Rovers overcame Burton Albion 2-0 courtesy of strikes from Harry Middleton and Matty Davies.

Final Third Development League - South Division

Gillingham defeated Bournemouth late on to continue their strong form in the Final Third Development League South Division.

Luke Norris, fresh off the back of a hat-trick against Peterborough United last week, broke the deadlock but Josh O’Hanlon soon equalised for the Cherries.

Greg Cundle sealed the victory for Gillingham seven minutes from time, though, to send them up to fourth in the table.

Leaders Luton Town reached the 20-point mark after they edged past Leyton Orient 3-2.

Alex Wall and Ross Lafayette were on hand to give the Hatters a 2-1 half-time lead, after Sandro Semedo had put Orient in front.

Gianvito Plasmati drew the O’s level early in the second period but Jake Howells converted a penalty to see Luton to their sixth league win of the season.

Final Third Development League - West Division

Morecambe lifted themselves off the bottom of the Final Third Development League West Division with a 2-1 win at Wrexham.

Joe McGee was the man who hit the winner for Morecambe, after Jack Sampson had cancelled out Joe Williams' opener for the Welsh side.

Final Third Development League Cup – North Group A

Shrewsbury narrowly missed out on a Northern Semi-Final after beating Walsall 2-1 in the Final Third Development League Cup.

Town were one of three sides, along with opponents Walsall and eventual successors Port Vale, who could have secured a last-four spot, but they required a sizable goal swing to do so. Strikes from James Caton and the much-travelled A.Trialist overturned Levi Rowley's opener for the Saddlers.
