Walsall - following up their ‘best result of the season’

31 December 2015

Walsall full-back Jason Demetriou has labelled his side’s 2-0 win over Peterborough United on Matchday 24 in Sky Bet League 1 as their best result of the season.

And the Saddlers will be aiming to follow that up on Matchday 25 in their first outing of 2016, when they host Rochdale.

Last time out

“I thought we deserved the win,” said goalscorer Demetriou, after the victory.

“Peterborough are a good, well-organised side and a different team to the one we played in September. It was such a hard game, being our second in three days.

“It wasn’t our best performance but it was probably our best result of the season so far.”

Five-star

Walsall’s win over Peterborough was their fifth successive victory, the most recent three being recorded without conceding a goal - their defence hasn’t been breached in six-and-a-half hours.

“We defend from the front and all the boys put in a good shift,” Demetriou added.

“No one is lazy in this team and the two centre-halves have been fantastic this year.

“It helps that we haven’t had to make too many changes – I know in the last few games we have, but most of the time at least four or five of the boys at the back are the same.

“We all know each other’s game as well, which is good.”

Double?

Goals from Andy Taylor and Sam Mantom gave the Saddlers a hard-fought 2-1 victory in the reverse match against Rochdale in August.

“They’re a strong, physical side,” Demetriou said of Keith Hill’s Dale.

“I remember they seemed to get stronger as the game went on when we last played them.

“We also played well and as long as we play our game, we’re confident we can get the result again.”
