Sky Bet Championship: Matchday 24 review

29 December 2015

Bolton Wanderers won for just the second time this season on Matchday 24, beating Blackburn Rovers 1-0.

In a hard-fought match at the Macron Stadium, Gary Madine scored the games only goal to end Bolton’s 17-game winless run but it wasn’t enough to lift them off the foot of the table.

Charlton Athletic and Bristol City are the two teams alongside Bolton the bottom three, and they both lost on Matchday 24.

The Addicks went down 2-0 at home to Wolves, while Bristol City suffered a 4-0 defeat at Turf Moor against Burnley.

Andre Gray was the hat-trick hero for the Clarets - his first treble in The Football League - and they sit fifth in the table but made ground on Hull, in third, who lost at Preston North End.

Elsewhere, Middlesbrough overtook Derby County at the summit with a 1-0 victory over Sheffield Wednesday in Monday's evening kick-off on Sky Sports.

The Rams would have to wait for the opportunity to return to top spot until Tuesday, and missed the chance after a 2-2 draw with Leeds United at Elland Road. It means Boro occupy first place heading into the New Year, and they will meet second-placed Derby at the Riverside Stadium on Saturday.

In the other final Sky Bet Championship games of 2015, Ipswich Town recorded a 1-0 win at Brighton & Hove Albion - their fifth consecutive away win in the League - to end the year in the Play-Off Places. Fulham also registered three points after a 4-1 home win over Rotherham United, while Cardiff City and Nottingham Forest shared the spoils in a 1-1 draw in South Wales.
