Everton duo return to Barnsley

Everton have found Oakwell a happy hunting ground with regard to transfers in recent times, with the Toffees snapping up John Stones and Mason Holgate.

The two defenders progressed through the Yorkshire outfit’s youth system to become first-team regulars, with Everton spotting their talent at an early age.

Stones has become a key figure at the heart of Everton’s defence, while Holgate is still adapting to being at the Premier League side, having only completed his transfer last month.

The 18-year-old made 20 appearances for Barnsley last term, but he is yet to make his competitive debut for Everton.

The season so far

Everton’s Premier League campaign has begun in fairly mixed fashion, and they head into the Capital One Cup on the back of a defeat to Manchester City. The Toffees competed well against Manuel Pellegrini’s side last weekend, but they fell to a 2-0 defeat.

Prior to that, Everton picked up an impressive 3-0 win at Southampton, while they started their campaign off with a 2-2 draw against Watford.

Barnsley, on the other hand, are starting to click into gear after stumbling out of the blocks.

Lee Johnson’s side lost 3-1 to Chesterfield on the opening day of the Sky Bet League 1 season, but they have been unbeaten since with wins over Burton Albion and Millwall among their results.

Everton and Barnsley have not been frequent opponents, but the Merseyside outfit have generally dominated when the two sides have met.

The Toffees have not lost to Barnsley since 1951, a run which has spanned for seven games.

Their most recent meeting came in 1998 when both sides were in the top flight, and it finished in a 2-2 draw.
