Gary Caldwell hails outstanding Wigan Athletic performance

20 August 2015

Gary Caldwell praised his Wigan Athletic team after they picked up their first Sky Bet League 1 win of the season in a 3-0 triumph over Scunthorpe United.

Wigan had notched just one point from their first two fixtures and suffered defeat in the Capital One Cup, but the Latics boss felt this result was due.

“The lads applied a lot of the things we’ve been asking of them in training and I’m happy that they’ve got the result that their hard work from day one deserved," Caldwell told the club's official website.

“The players have now got confidence, they see that this way of playing will work and this way of playing is very difficult for our opponents.

“We were outstanding from the very first minute all the way to the end - we were totally dominant.”

The Wigan goals came via Will Grigg, Donervon Daniels and Craig Davies - and the latter impressed the Scotsman on his first start for the club.

Caldwell continued: “Our threat going forward came from all angles, the two strikers were a handful. Craig coming in really helped Will and the spaces opened up because of their movement and the intensity that they attacked with.

“I had a chat with Craig on Monday and he spoke to me about training and how he wants to play games to show how good he can be, and to be fair to him he backed his words up with a massive performance tonight.

“There’s a long way to go, it's one result and there is a lot of football to be played.  There is also a lot of improvement we can get from the group of players, this is only the beginning.”

The win sees Wigan climb to 11th in the Sky Bet League 1 table, which you can view by clicking here.
