Bury in sight of history ahead of opening fixture with Doncaster Rovers

7 August 2015

Bury take on Doncaster Rovers in Match Round 1 of Sky Bet League 1 this weekend, but their maiden fixture in a new division is not the only intriguing sub-plot surrounding the game.

En route to automatic promotion from Sky Bet League 2 last term, the Shakers accumulated a remarkable eight consecutive away wins, which has left them in sight of a Football League record.

The most successive wins on the road is 10, a feat achieved by Tottenham Hotspur during the 1959/60 Division 1 season. With Bury now just two wins away from equalling that tally, they already sit joint third in the all-time list, alongside Cardiff City, Rotherham United, Preston North End, Leeds United and Stockport County.

David Flitcroft's men travel to the Keepmoat Stadium this weekend to face Doncaster Rovers, with their record-chase adding extra incentive to pick up three points.

Bury will have to upset the home crowd for the first time in three matches to keep that chase intact, and they haven’t toppled Doncaster on their own stomping ground since 1996.

They do, though, lead the overall head-to-head against Rovers 29-18, and they took the points last time they met, in February 2013, courtesy of a 2-0 scoreline with goals from Andy Bishop and Nicky Ajose.

Three points on Saturday would see them move within one away win of matching the record, and should that happen, Crewe Alexandra will be the only team standing in their way. If successful once more on their travels against the Railwaymen, they will have an opportunity to reach the prized 11th win at Banks's Stadium against Walsall next month.
