The road to glory – Brentford and Wolves need away-day success

24 April 2015

The Sky Bet Championship’s top eight have been clear of the pack for some time, but the Play-Off race could come to an end this weekend.

Both Brentford and Wolverhampton Wanderers have been in the mix for promotion throughout the season, but they find themselves three points adrift of a top-six position with time running out.

And with two games remaining, the pair need to pick up points if they want to extend their season beyond 2nd May. Both are sitting on 72 points, three behind sixth-placed Ipswich Town and four behind Derby County, who are one place above the Tractor Boys in the standings.

With the Bees and Wolves possessing inferior goal differences to those sides above them, they really need maximum points this weekend to give themselves a chance on the last day, and they both face away trips to make their challenge that little bit harder.

Brentford travel to the Madejski Stadium to meet Reading on the back of a four-game winless run, and Wolves go to Wigan Athletic, who hadn't won at the DW Stadium since August until Gary Caldwell's home dugout debut last week.

Kenny Jackett's men have picked up just one point from the last available nine - a run of form that has seen their chances of a second consecutive promotion fade. However, three points in Lancashire will give them hope ahead of the final weekend, especially if Ipswich or Derby drop points on Saturday.
