The battle between Sky Bet League 1's top two - Preston v Bristol City

10 April 2015

We've taken an in-depth look at the clash between Sky Bet League 1's top two sides, Bristol City and Preston North End.

Currently occupying the automatic promotion places, unbeaten in their past 10 games and sitting in the top two in both of the home and away form tables; there are a lot of similarities to be drawn between Preston North End and Bristol City this season.

And the two sides meet at Deepdale this Saturday in a match that could go a long way to deciding the destiny of the 2014/15 Sky Bet League 1 title.

It has looked like top spot has been in City’s grasp for much of the campaign, but a 13-game undefeated run for Preston has seen them become the Robins’ closest contenders.

Since their last loss - 2-1 at Crawley Town on 31st January - the Lancashire team have taken a stunning 33 points from 39, catapulting them into second and just eight points behind Bristol City.

Ahead of their trip to Deepdale, Steve Cotterill’s men have registered 24 points from the last 30 on offer. They’ve only lost five times this season, but one of those was at home to Preston - 1-0 back in November.

A victory for the Lilywhites this weekend would move them within five points of top spot, with a game in-hand; increasing the pressure on Cotterill's leaders.

However, all three points for the south-west club would put them a dominant 11 points clear and could set them up to secure the title the following week, adding to their Johnstone’s Paint Trophy success last month.

A win for the visitors could also see them celebrating promotion come 5pm, as long as it is coupled with a defeat for Milton Keynes Dons and a draw or loss for Swindon Town.
