Shrewsbury Town’s Connor Goldson: “It was an incredible feeling”

27 April 2015

Defender Connor Goldson has described Shrewsbury Town’s promotion to Sky Bet League 2 as an “incredible feeling’ after they beat Cheltenham Town 1-0.

Jean Louis Akpa-Akpro scored the only goal of the game for the Shrews and the three points mean they can’t fall out of the automatic promotion places on the final day of the season.

“I said after last season I wanted to help get this club back into League 1 straight away and thankfully we have been able to do that,” Goldson said, on the club’s official website.

“The passion the fans showed was amazing, when they mobbed us at the end it was an incredible feeling.

“The gaffer has done a great job of rebuilding and he has brought in some quality players which has been a massive boost.

“He was the main reason why I decided to stay here last summer. His confidence gave me a real belief that we would go up and we have ended up doing it in style by scoring the most and conceding the least.”

Micky Mellon’s men trail table-toppers Burton by two points ahead of the last weekend, when they host Plymouth Argyle. The Brewers, meanwhile, are on the road to Cambridge United.

Goldson insists the Shrews haven’t given up on the title, but believes promotion was paramount.

“We will give everything against Plymouth to try and win the game and snatch the league title. Burton have been great all season and have rarely slipped up so credit to them if they do end up winning.

“The aim at the start of the season was to win the league so we really want it but if Burton take it the main thing is we are promoted.”
