Preston North End and Milton Keynes Dons – a two-horse race for Sky Bet League 1 promotion

24 April 2015

Two games remain, and just one point separates the two sides chasing automatic promotion from Sky Bet League 1, Preston North End and Milton Keynes Dons.

The duo have been fighting it out behind Bristol City for some time, and the battle rumbles on this weekend against tough opposition.

Preston currently occupy that coveted second place, one point clear of the Dons, and they host Swindon Town at Deepdale on Saturday afternoon.

Swindon are all-but confirmed as the fourth-placed side in Sky Bet League 1, so the Robins will provide a tough test for the in-form Lilywhites, who are currently on a remarkable 17-match unbeaten streak.

A run of three consecutive draws saw Preston's points advantage over MK gradually shorten, but they returned to winning ways in midweek with a 3-1 victory at Notts County to remain in pole position for that second automatic promotion place.

Milton Keynes have been relentless in their pursuit of the Lancashire outfit – they are currently nine without defeat, picking up 23 points from a possible 27 in that time.

Their last three outings have produced two 3-0 wins and a 6-1 demolition of Leyton Orient, and they travel to Spotland this weekend to face Rochdale.

Anything but a victory ends Dale's Play-Off hopes, so it could be an open game against the Dons, who are the top scorers in The Football League this term with 93 goals.

As a result of that, they boast a far superior goal difference to Preston which could be crucial a week on Sunday.

If the Dons only pick up a point this weekend and Preston win, then they could still pip North End to promotion on the last day. That, however, would mean winning at home to Yeovil Town and Simon Grayson's men losing at Crawley Town on what would be a dramatic final day.

Therefore, three points will be very much the aim as this thrilling season continues towards its climax.
