22 April 2015

Southend United manager Phil Brown praised his side’s character after they won 1-0 at promotion rivals Bury on Tuesday.

The result - the Blues’ sixth successive victory - saw them move up to fourth in Sky Bet League 2, leapfrogging the Shakers, to go level on points with Wycombe Wanderers, who occupy the third automatic promotion place with two games remaining.

David Worrall was the the man on target for the decisive goal at the JD Stadium and, at the other end, Dan Bentley registered a seventh clean sheet on the spin.

“We didn't play particularly well in the first half and Bury were the better team,” boss Brown told the club’s official website.

“We got into them at half-time and the character was fantastic. It was phenomenal response.

“In the first half they had lots of shots, chances and possession. We defended excellently.

“It's a massive game at Roots Hall against Luton Town on Saturday.”
