Luton Town went into Tuesday afternoon's match at Gillingham knowing that they could clinch the title with victory, and they did so in spectacular fashion.
A Shaun Whalley hat-trick and goals from Ricky Miller and Alex Lacey did the initial damage and, after Gillingham pulled one back, Lacey headed home his second and Luton's sixth to give the Hatters a 6-1 win.
However, the Gills bounced back later in the week with a second fixture, this time away at Portsmouth.
Greg Cundle, a Dory Yates own goal and Aiden Blanchard sealed the win, despite Liam Sayers and James Granger replying for Pompey.
Portsmouth had recorded three points earlier in the week though, edging out Peterborough United 1-0 on Tuesday thanks to a first-half header from Cole Kpekawa.
In the division's other game, AFC Wimbledon cruised to a 4-0 win over Cambridge United on Tuesday evening.
George Oakley opened the scoring for the Dons before the break, and Alfie Egan, Egli Kaja and Dan Gallagher all found the net in the second period to seal an emphatic triumph.

Walsall produced the biggest win of the week after thrashing Morecambe 7-0.
The Saddlers' goals were scored by seven different players – James Baxendale, Chris Sutherland, Amadou Bakayoko, Levi Rowley, Jordan Murphy, Rico Henry, and Reece Flanagan.
Tranmere Rovers only needed one scorer in their match versus Shrewsbury Town, with Jake Kirby scoring a hat-trick in a 3-0 success in Shropshire.
Final Third Development League - East Division
Hull City defeated Gateshead for the second time in a week, courtesy of a 2-1 triumph on Tuesday.
Johan Ter Horst opened the scoring before Greg Luer doubled the lead, and the Tigers held on for the three points despite a late goal from Mechack Kanda.
On Wednesday evening, Hull's rivals for the East Division title, Doncaster Rovers, suffered a setback at Hartlepool United.
Scott Fenwick and Ebby Nelson-Addy grabbed the first-half goals to hand Pools a 2-0 victory.
The fixtures came to a climax with Rotherham United hosting Gateshead, another side who played twice this week, and it was the home side who came out on top.
The game looked to be heading towards a goalless draw but a late Brandon Potts strike won it for the Millers.
