A three-way battle for promotion in Sky Bet League 2

24 April 2015

With two games to go, Wycombe Wanderers, Southend United and Bury are all in contention for the third automatic promotion place in Sky Bet League 2.

The battle has intensified with Wycombe clinging on to their place in the top three, which they have held since mid-September.

Bury missed the chance to displace the Chairboys in midweek, when they faced off against Southend at the JD Stadium – a game which the visitors won 1-0, courtesy of David Worrall's free-kick.

Southend are certainly the in-form team of the trio, having racked up six straight victories and gone seven matches without conceding a goal. This weekend, though, they come up across another team eyeing up promotion – Luton Town – albeit the Hatters can only reach League 1 via the Play-Offs.

Wycombe have 81 points and sit above the Blues on goal difference, and they host Morecambe at Adams Park. The omens are good for Gareth Ainsworth's side – Wycombe have faced the Shrimps 11 times, winning seven and drawing the other four.

As for Bury, their loss to Southend means they now sit two points further back on 79 points and face an uphill battle to grab third. This Saturday they host AFC Wimbledon, and the Shakers will want the three points to give themselves at least a fighting chance ahead of the crunch clashes on the final day of the season.
