Johnstone's Paint Trophy Round 1 preview

2 September 2014

Northern Section

Two-time Johnstone's Paint Trophy winners Carlisle United have an away trip to fellow Sky Bet League 2 side Accrington Stanley in Round 1 of this year's competition.

The Cumbrians are currently managerless after the dismissal of Graham Kavanagh, following a disappointing start to their League 2 campaign - they are 22nd with 2 points to show from their opening five matches.

Club captain Paul Thirlwell and goalkeeping coach Tony Caig will be in charge for the trip to Accrington, who are below Carlisle in the League 2 table, with just a single point.

There are two clashes between near-neighbours in the Northern Section with Fleetwood Town welcoming Morecambe to Highbury and Notts County hosting Mansfield Town.

The Cod Army have started life in Sky Bet League 1 positively, sitting second after five outings with three wins and two draws. Morecambe have started brightly in League 2 but their 100 per cent was brought to an end last Saturday when they lost 2-1 to Tranmere Rovers.

The clash between the Magpies and the Stags will be their first meeting since a goalless draw in 2008. County are 10th in League 1, while Mansfield have lost their last two and lie 13th in League 2.

Scunthorpe United and Chesterfield were promoted from League 2 together last term and meet at Glanford Park. The pair drew both of their encounters 1-1 last season.

Fellow League 1 new boys Rochdale take on Crewe Alexandra, who are yet to taste victory this term, while Barnsley visit York City, who have drawn all five of their League games.

Bradford City have made a name for themselves in cup competitions over recent seasons and they visit Oldham Athletic. Shrewsbury, who knocked Premier League Leicester City out of the Capital One Cup last week, are at Deepdale to face Preston North End, who remain unbeaten in League 1.

The stand-out fixture sees current champions Peterborough United go up against Sky Bet League 1 rivals Leyton Orient live on Sky Sports.

Posh won the 2014 Johnstone's Paint Trophy - the club's first piece of major cup silverware - with a 3-1 victory over Chesterfield at Wembley Stadium in March. They now begin their defence against the team who beat them in the League 1 Play-Offs in May.

Darren Ferguson's men overcame Swindon Town in the Northern Area Final on their way to Wembley glory, and the Robins will look to go one better this year, starting with a trip to lower-ranked Newport County. That game, though, doesn't take place until later in September.

Cambridge United were promoted back into The Football League last term and they return to Johnstone's Paint Trophy action with a tough trip away at Crawley Town, of League 1.

The Reds enjoyed a strong start to the season, winning three in a row, but have since suffered four straight defeats. Cambridge meanwhile thrashed Carlisle United 5-0 on Saturday afternoon.

Yeovil Town - relegated from the Sky Bet Championship last season - host Sky Bet League 2 side Portsmouth, who suffered their first defeat under Andy Awford last weekend. Yeovil are yet to win at home this term, drawing two and losing two.

Elsewhere in the Southern half of the draw, Wycombe Wanderers take on Coventry City, Cheltenham Town host Oxford United with both sides enjoying contrasting starts to the Sky Bet League 2 campaign, Southend United travel to AFC Wimbledon and Stevenage go up against Gillingham.
