Sky Bet League 2 round-up

17 October 2014

Wycombe Wanderers claimed an outright lead at the top of Sky Bet League 2 thanks to a win over AFC Wimbledon and Burton Albion's home loss to Morecambe.

Josh Scowen and Sam Wood scored in the second half as the Chairboys enjoyed a routine 2-0 victory against the Wombles at Adams Park.

Burton, meanwhile, were beaten by the same scoreline when hosting Morecambe at Pirelli Stadium, with Kevin Ellison and Alex Kenyon doing the damage for the Shrimps.

That allowed Bury to move up to second thanks to a 3-0 defeat of Portsmouth at Gigg Lane, where Danny Mayor, Ryan Lowe and Danny Rose hit the target.

Luton Town kept up the pressure on the early pacesetters with a 2-1 success at Hartlepool United, where Mark Cullen and Jim Stevenson struck for the Hatters before Neil Austin set up a tense finish with a late penalty for the hosts.

Down at the bottom, there was no respite for basement dwellers Tranmere Rovers or struggling York City despite the arrival of new managers this week.

Micky Adams could not make an immediate impact with Rovers as they went down 2-0 at Oxford United due to goals from Tyrone Barnett and Alfie Potter.

There was also no dream start for Russ Wilcox as York had Ryan Jarvis sent off before James Collins snatched a late 1-0 win for Shrewsbury Town at Bootham Crescent.

Terry Gornell bagged a brace and John Marquis also scored as Cheltenham Town edged out Northampton Town 3-2, with Joel Byrom and David Moyo netting for the visitors.

Chris Zebroski claimed a 90th-minute winner for Newport County in a 1-0 triumph at Dagenham and Redbridge after Abu Ogogo saw red for the home team.

Carlisle United's recent resurgence stalled in a 1-0 loss at Plymouth, with Lewis Alessandra netting the crucial strike at Home Park, while Stevenage beat Accrington Stanley 2-1, with Chris Whelpdale and Charlie Lee on target either side of Lee Molyneux's effort for Stanley.

Exeter City earned a point at Southend United after Graham Cummins cancelled out David Worrall's opener, while Mansfield Town and Cambridge United played out a goalless stalemate.
