Sky Bet Football League Team of the Week

27 October 2014

We pick out 11 top performers and a manager from the week's Sky Bet Football League matches.

Goalkeeper: Keiren Westwood (Sheffield Wednesday)

Westwood was in fine form for the Owls against Norwich City, making a number of impressive saves to keep a clean sheet. The Republic of Ireland goalkeeper brilliantly tipped Nathan Redmond’s long-distance shot around the post, and also stopped two close-range Cameron Jerome efforts.

Defender: Danny Shittu (Millwall)

The strong defender scored for the first time since November 2013 in his only league start so far this season, and helped the Lions to a clean sheet against Cardiff City. His heroics secured Millwall their first Championship win in eight matches.

Defender: Ryan Haynes (Coventry City)

The youngster scored a fantastic, right-footed curler to lay the foundations for a remarkable Coventry comeback against Peterborough United. He then had a hand in the equalising goal, before the Sky Blues completed their second-half turnaround to win 3-2.

Defender: Kelvin Mellor (Plymouth Argyle)

Mellor helped Plymouth keep yet another clean sheet in Sky Bet League 2, extending their run without conceding to over 500 minutes, after a 3-0 win over Cheltenham. He also played a part in the Pilgrims' opening goal, teeing up Reuben Reid’s 20-yard drive.

Midfielder: James McClean (Wigan Athletic)

The winger became the first player in over 10 hours of Championship football to score against Derby County, and did so twice to earn Wigan their first victory in eight games.

Midfielder: Marc Pugh (Bournemouth)

A number of Bournemouth players could have been named in the week's best XI after recording their biggest ever win, against Birmingham, but we've chosen Marc Pugh as he netted a hat-trick in the rout at St Andrew's.

Midfielder: Gwion Edwards (Crawley Town)

Edwards put Crawley 1-0 up at Gillingham with his neat run behind their defence being matched with a calm finish past goalkeeper Stuart Nelson.

Midfielder: Kyle Dempsey (Carlisle United)

Young midfielder Dempsey put in a Man of the Match performance in Carlisle's 2-1 victory at home to Oxford United. A stand-out moment saw his 89th-minute corner pick out Derek Asamoah, who duly converted to secure all three points for the Cumbrians.

Midfielder: James Wesolowski (Shrewsbury Town)

Wesolowski cancelled out Jed Wallace’s Portsmouth opener to score his first ever goal for Shrewsbury, who went on to win 2-1 and move to within a point of the top three in Sky Bet League 2.

Striker: Armand Gnanduillet (Tranmere Rovers)

The on-loan Chesterfield striker bagged a brace as Tranmere twice came from behind to draw with Wimbledon and move off the bottom of League 2. His first was a 20-yard strike that followed some tidy footwork, while his second was a towering header from a corner.

Striker: Joe Garner (Preston North End)

Garner’s second-half hat-trick saw Preston recover from a 2-0 deficit to win 3-2 against Fleetwood Town, and secure a sixth straight victory for the Lilywhites.

Striker: Ian Henderson (Rochdale)

The 29-year-old netted his sixth and seventh Sky Bet League 1 goals of the season to make it back-to-back wins for Rochdale as they romped to a 3-0 victory at Yeovil Town on Saturday.

Manager: John Still (Luton Town)

Still's Hatters moved to the summit of Sky Bet League 2 by notching their seventh victory on the bounce, beating Northampton Town 1-0 at Kenilworth Road.
