Newport County hero Joe Day has revealed his penalty saving heroics in their 1-0 victory over Southend United was no stroke of luck. The 24-year-old was at full stretch to deny Mark Weston giving the Shrimpers the lead on Tuesday night, before he sparked the attack that saw the Exiles take all three points.
Day saved the spot-kick and sent his team back down the other end, where Aaron O'Connor's cushioned header allowed Mark Byrne to fire into the bottom corner from the edge of the box.
The result meant Justin Edinburgh's side leapfrogged Southend into eighth in League 2, with Day admitting that research paid off.
"Luckily the goalkeeping coach does his homework on the opposition's penalty takers, so I knew where he had hit his last one and it was a case of trying to get into the player's head, and luckily the homework paid off," he said.
"If you can stay in the game until the late stages in this league then you always have a chance of winning."
