Play-Off preview: Derby County v Brighton and Hove Albion

10 May 2014

Either Derby County or Brighton and Hove Albion will become the first team to secure their place in a Final in the Play-Offs of the Sky Bet Football League on Sunday, when the pair go head-to-head at the iPro Stadium in the second leg.

The match is live on Sky Sports and official updates will be provided via @SkyBetChamp and on the Play-Offs of the Sky Bet Football League blog. Join in the conversation using #PlayOffs.

The Rams go into the game with a 2-1 advantage, having initially gone behind at the Amex Stadium on Thursday night.

Jesse Lingard opened the scoring for the Seagulls, firing home after an Inigo Calderon cut-back, but Chris Martin's penalty just over 10 minutes later levelled the scores.

It was Martin who was involved again when Derby took the lead. His shot struck the crossbar before rebounding into the net off Brighton goalkeeper Tomasz Kuszczak just before half-time and that's the way the score remained.

That took their scintillating form to six wins in their last seven outings. It was also their third successive victory against Oscar Garcia's men, with both league matches this term ending in their favour.

All of that makes Derby hot favourites to book their place in the Final under the arch at Wembley on Saturday 24th May to battle for promotion to the Premier League.

In the Media

Brighton manager Oscar Garcia insists his players need to believe they can make history, with no Championship side ever overturning a first-leg home deficit to reach the Final.

He told The Argus: "It's something we can think about and it could be a good reason to motivate the players more. We have to believe, we need to believe and we will go there to get a result."

Defender Stephen Ward has called on his Brighton team-mates to produce an impressive away performance to overturn the 2-1 loss.

"With some of our away performances this year, we can take real credit from going to bigger sides and getting positive results," he told seagulls.co.uk.

"So we have to take that into account and look to do the same on Sunday because there won't be much in it. It's similar to last weekend when we travelled to Forest knowing we had to win to get into the Play-Offs. We know we need to win this game to stay in with a chance of getting promoted, so we have nothing to lose."

Derby manager Steve McClaren believes his side will need to take their first-leg character into the match at the iPro Stadium.

Talking to Rams Player, McClaren said: "Brighton came into the Play-Offs on a high and in the first 20 minutes they were quick out of the traps.

"They had a big crowd behind them and we expected them to put us under pressure. It took a lot of character to come back like we did and we'll need to show more of the same on Sunday in the second leg."
