Jonathan Grounds nearing Oldham Athletic exit

7 May 2014

Jonathan Grounds looks set to leave Oldham Athletic after they confirmed he was in negotiations with potential clubs as they announced their retained list.

The 26-year-old played 54 times for Latics this season and was a key component in a back four which helped ensure they avoided relegation with a run of 10 games without defeat to close out the season.

Central defender James Wilson is one of four players to have a one-year option exercised on their contracts with David Mellor, the injury-prone Genseric Kusunga and Carl Winchester also remaining at Boundary Park.

First-choice goalkeeper Paul Rachubka, full-back Connor Brown and midfielder James Wesolowski, who was voted the Players' Player of the Year, have all been offered new deals.

Latics did, though, confirm that Charlie MacDonald, Kirk Millar, Danny Gosset and Terry Dunfield would all be seeking new clubs after being released.

"It's with great sadness that people have to leave the football club but I wish the players every success in the future and thank them for their efforts with Oldham Athletic," boss Lee Johnson said on the club's official website.
