Eight leave in Sheffield Wednesday cull

6 May 2014

Winger Jermaine Johnson and centre-back Miguel Llera are among a group of eight players released by Sheffield Wednesday.

Johnson joined the Owls in January 2007 and scored 30 goals in 255 appearances for the club, while Llera featured 87 times during a two-and-a-half-year stay.

Adam Davies, Arron Jameson, Reda Johnson, Anthony Gardner, Martin Taylor and David Prutton have also been told they have no future at Hillsborough.

"These decisions are never easy but they are part and parcel of football," Wednesday manager Stuart Gray told the club's official website.

"There is no sleight on the players I will be letting go because they are great professionals who have always gone about their business in the right and thoroughly professional manner.

"But every manager in the country has his own ideas over how he wants his squad to look moving forward and I am no different.

"I am sure the released players will have no problem whatsoever in gaining new clubs. I would like to thank them all for their support and service to Sheffield Wednesday and wish them the very best of luck for the future."

Goalkeeper Chris Kirkland and midfielder Jose Semedo have done enough to earn new deals, while t he Owls will also open talks with Glenn Loovens and Oguchi Onyewu, who joined the club on short-term deals this season.
