Middlesbrough has been named The Football League Family Club of the Year at The Football League Awards 2014.

Chief Operating Officer at Middlesbrough, Mark Ellis, received the award at the gala ceremony at The Brewery, London, on Sunday evening in front of over 600 guests from clubs, sponsors and the football industry.

This year a total of 36 clubs were shortlisted for 17 awards and Middlesbrough beat competition from Birmingham City, Bristol City, Oxford United, Plymouth Argyle and Wolverhampton Wanderers to claim The Football League Family Club of the Year Award.

Middlesbrough proudly unveiled their Generation Red family zone at the beginning of the 2013/14 season. The 3,000-capacity, dedicated family space is packed with innovative activities and family focused supporter care at every home game. Boro's values of honesty, respect and humility are central to the creation of a family experience that goes beyond the few hours of a matchday. Although operating with a limited budget, the club have already achieved tangible success in attracting family groups through the efforts of their Generation Red team.

On winning the award, Ellis said: "Generation Red was a real team effort from the CEO all the way down the club.

"The Family Zone has seen so many people come through the door and we're so proud that it has seen increased attendances at a tough financial time."

Football League clubs excel at attracting young fans and families to their grounds. By using mystery shopper families, The Football League's Family Excellence Award scheme acknowledges the clubs that are delivering a fantastic family matchday experience. The benchmark to achieve the award has been raised every year since its introduction in 2007.

When assessing the category, judges looked for the club that is leading the way in continuing to push the standard even higher and providing the very best experience for families across The Football League.

Shaun Harvey, Chief Executive of The Football League, said: "The Football League Awards 2014 has given us the opportunity to reward outstanding achievement, both on and off the pitch, by Football League clubs.

"Every one of tonight's winners is a worthy recipient of their award and all the other nominees have helped set an exceptional standard this year.

"It has been a tremendous celebration of life in The Football League."

The Awards were streamed live on The Football League's official YouTube and Facebook pages, as well as official club websites and YouTube channels for the first time ever.
