Iran striker Reza Ghoochannejhad could become the first Charlton Athletic player to score at a World Cup Finals when his side take on Nigeria in their Group F opener tonight.
Ghoochannejhad - known as Gucci for short - is widely expected to line up as the lone striker for Team Melli against the Super Eagles in Curitiba later today after scoring 10 times in his 14 previous appearances for the national team.
The 26-year-old joined Sky Bet Championship side Charlton from Belgian club Standard Li?ge in the January transfer window, signing a two-and-a-half-year contract with the London club.
Ghoochannejhad grew up in the Netherlands after his parents moved there when he was a boy, and his call up to the Iranian national team reflects the desire of manager Carlos Queiroz to identify and utilise Iranian talent from around the world.
Charlton Athletic fans have been taking to social media ahead of tonight's match to express their support for Gucci.
Sky Bet have priced Ghoochannejhad at 7/4 to become the first Addick to score at the World Cup.
Also in Group F are Argentina are Bosnia and Herzegovina, who Iran play on Saturday 21st and Wednesday 25th June respectively.
