Carlisle United agree deals for duo

20 June 2014

Carlisle have made left-back Danny Grainger their first summer signing - and a deal is in place for Hartlepool midfielder Antony Sweeney to join him at Brunton Park.

Former Gretna, Hearts and Dundee United defender Grainger has put pen to paper on a one-year deal. The move sees the 27-year-old links up with his former Gretna manager Davie Irons, who is Graham Kavanagh's assistant at the Blues.

Sweeney has agreed a two-year contract which he is expected to sign next month.

``This is a fresh challenge for Danny and it's one I know he is looking forward to,`` said Carlisle boss Kavanagh.

"It's his local club and I know, from talking to him, that he is determined to make an impact. He's another who is aggressive, who has ability on the ball and who likes to attack as well as do his main job of defending."

On Sweeney, Kavanagh added: "Antony fits the type of player we have been looking to recruit this summer.

"He has experience at this level and he's a man in terms of the way he plays his football. He's strong and he's capable of going box-to-box which, in turn, helps when it comes to getting or creating goals."

Grainger finished last season on loan at Dunfermline after finding himself out of favour at St Mirre n.

Sweeney, 30, has made 382 appearances for Hartlepool, spending his entire career at the north east club.
