Andy Dawson is being considered for the role of assistant manager at Scunthorpe United.
The 35-year-old, who is out of contract, already holds a player-coach position at Glanford Park but is now in the running to become boss Russ Wilcox's right-hand man.
Wilcox told BBC Radio Humberside: "He has to be a candidate. For me, he's had a terrific first season. It's difficult because I've been in Andy's shoes. I know what it's like trying to combine playing and coaching.
"He's well liked in the group and I have to sit down with Andy and see where he wants to go.
"With regards the playing side, he's only 35 and he's still very fit. It's Andy's decision if he wants to carry on playing. There is an offer there for him to carry on coaching and playing and we'll sit down and have a word with him about it.
"He's just finished his UEFA A Licence coaching course, so we'll have a good chat and see where it goes from there."
Wilcox also revealed the club are hoping to tie up their first signing of the summer next week.
