Sky Bet League 2 key transfer: John-Joe O'Toole to Northampton Town

2 July 2014

Midfielder John-Joe O'Toole penned a three-year deal with Northampton Town on Monday 30th June in one of the key signings in Sky Bet League 2.

The 25-year-old impressed last term in a struggling Bristol Rovers side that was relegated on the final day, with the former Watford man top-scoring for the Gas, netting 15 goals in 46 games.

Despite Rovers' relegation out of The Football League, his performances earned him a place in the PFA League 2 Team of the Year.

He has made no secret of his ambition to play higher up The Football League and clearly believes that can be fulfilled with Chris Wilder's Northampton, who themselves only clinched Sky Bet League 2 survival on the final day of the 2013/14 campaign.

On securing the services of O'Toole, manager Wilder told "We have had to work really hard to get this deal done so a lot of credit must go to the chairman.

"We know he turned down three clubs in League 1 and others in League 2 to come here and it is great that he wants to be part of what we are building.

"He is a quality player, he offers a big goal threat as his total last season proves and we are really looking forward to working with him."

The Cobblers have also signed defenders Zander Diamond and Evan Horwood and striker Marc Richards on permanent deals during the close-season, while Port Vale attacking midfielder Kaid Mohamed and Swansea City full-back Danny Alfei have moved to Sixfields on a season-long loans.
