Andy Butler was club captain at Walsall, where he had made 176 appearances in four years, but rejected the offer of a new deal back in May.
Instead, the defender decided to move to Sky Bet League 1 rivals Sheffield United who, after a revival under Nigel Clough last term, finished just seven points outside of the Play-Offs.
That has set them up nicely for a challenge at the top this time around and Butler will be a key figure in that.
In the centre-back, the Blades have secured a player who has consistently performed at Sky Bet League 1 level for a number of years and someone who will compliment his fellow defenders, including the impressive Harry Maguire.
On the signing of the 30-year-old, Blades boss Clough told sufc.co.uk: "Andy is vastly experienced, a leader and an excellent character, both on and off the field.
"That is important to what we want to achieve next season. We want three or four leaders with captaincy experience within the squad, that way we aren't just relying on one person."
Clough has additionally brought in experienced winger Jamal Campbell-Ryce, who will add flair, and 22-year-old midfielder James Wallace from Tranmere Rovers - 'one of the best midfielders in the league' in the manager's words.
