Exeter City drew 0-0 with a Fluminense XI in what was the 100th anniversary of the formation of the Brazilian national team.
Hosted at the historic Estadio das Laranjeiras - the same venue at which the Grecians played a Brazil XI in 1914 - the League 2 outfit battled out a goalless draw in front of 600 invited fans, including over 150 from Exeter.
Another Sky Bet League 2 side came up against foreign opposition over the weekend with Cambridge United playing both Espanyol and Shakhtar Donetsk in the 2014 Absolute Sports Travel Cup at The Abbey. The U's drew 2-2 with the Spanish side before going down 3-2 against the Ukrainians.
Premier League duo Liverpool and Chelsea both played League opposition over the weekend with Brendan Rodgers' side beating Preston North End and the Blues overcoming AFC Wimbledon. It wasn't plain sailing for either side, though.
At Deepdale, Josh Brownhill gave North End the lead before Liverpool turned it around to win 2-1. It was the same story at Wimbledon, where Neal Ardley's men were 2-0 to the good at the break in front of over 4,000 supporters, after goals from Alan Bennett and Matt Tubbs. John Terry scored twice after the break and Mohamed Salah also netted to give the top-flight club a 3-2 victory.
A handful of Football League clubs struggled against non-league opposition over the weekend with Tranmere Rovers, Walsall and Chesterfield all tasting 2-1 defeats, to Marine, Torquay United and Lincoln City respectively. Dagenham and Redbridge, meanwhile, were thumped 4-0 at Ebbsfleet United.
Elsewhere, Coventry City were trailing 1-0 at near-neighbours Nuneaton Town before the match was abandoned in the 53rd minute after torrential rain.
Portsmouth fared better against lower league opposition as they triumphed 6-1 at Bognor Regis Town with over 2,000 fans in attendance. Pompey's goals were scored by Ryan Taylor, Danny Hollands, Bradley Tarbuck, Danny Barcham, Miles Storey and Jed Wallace.
Blackpool, with five trialists in their team and another three on the bench, also secured a comfortable pre-season win by beating Penrith 4-0.
Leeds United overcame Guiseley 2-0 with late goals from Sam Wooton and Jason Pearce, while Rene Howe grabbed a brace as Newport County registered a 2-0 success at Gloucester City.
There were narrow victories for Scunthorpe United, Port Vale and Hartlepool United.
Scunthorpe United have Paddy Madden and Deon Burton to thank for their strikes in a 2-1 win at Gainsborough Trinity, while the Valiants' goals came from Ryan Lloyd and Carl Dickinson against Alfreton Town, which was their fourth pre-season victory. Jonathan Franks' late goal was the difference between Hartlepool and Conference North side Bradford Park Avenue.
In a handful of the weekend's all-League encounters, Burton Albion hit four without reply past Sheffield United in the Bass Charity Vase, with the first three coming in the opening 45 minutes. At Meadow Lane, Derby County's Chris Martin hit a hat-trick as the Rams beat Notts County 3-1.
James Tavernier's wonder goal for Wigan Athletic at Rochdale wasn't enough for the Latics after they lost 2-1 to their Sky Bet League 1 opponents. Dale, promoted from Sky Bet League 2 last term, claimed their win with goals from Ian Henderson and Bastien Hery.
Finally, Yann Kermorgant scored four goals in Bournemouth's 11-0 demolition of Dorchester Town.
The former Charlton Athletic man had a hat-trick before the interval when the Cherries were already 8-0 ahead, with Matt Ritchie and Brett Pitman both scoring twice and Harry Arter also netting in the first 45 minutes. Kermorgant scored another shortly after the break and Callum Wilson got his first for the club, before development squad midfielder Ben Whitfield notched to complete the rout.
