Pre-season midweek round-up

24 July 2014

With just over two weeks until The Football League 2014/15 campaign begins in all three divisions, The League's 72 clubs are fully immersed in their pre-season schedules and plenty of games have taken place over the past few days.

In all-Football League matches, Peterborough United were twice pegged back by Sky Bet Championship newcomers Wolverhampton Wanderers in a 2-2 draw. Forty miles down the road, Northampton Town also played out a tie against higher-league opposition, 1-1 against Sheffield United, with Andy Butler netting for his new club before Marc Richards equalised for the Cobblers.

There was another draw as Brighton and Hove Albion, who go to Peterborough on Saturday, were held to a 1-1 stalemate by near neighbours Crawley Town.

However, there was one result that went with the pre-game predictions, at the Weston Homes Community Stadium, where Ipswich Town beat Sky Bet League 1's Colchester United. The Sky Bet Championship team were forced to work hard for their 3-0 triumph though; the goals eventually coming twice through Frank Nouble and a Jack Marriott effort.

Sky Bet League 2 outfits York City, Hartlepool United and Carlisle United all tested themselves against top-flight opposition, the latter two playing Sunderland on consecutive days.

The Mackems took over 1,000 supporters to Brunton Park for a 1-0 victory over the Cumbrians on Tuesday evening, when over 3,500 fans in all watched a Mikael Mandron finish just after the hour mark settle the scoreline.

Then, 24 hours later, the Black Cats contributed to another sizeable pre-season crowd, this time at Victoria Park. Out of 5,617 spectators, more than half - 3,252 - were from Sunderland, and they saw a hat-trick of goals in the final half an hour secure a 3-0 win; two from Andrew Cartwright and one from Carl Lawson.

York, meanwhile, went down 2-0 to FA Cup finalists Hull after second-half goals from Sone Aluko and Yannick Sagbo.

Tranmere Rovers, of Sky Bet League 1, also went up against Premier League opposition in the shape of near-neighbours Everton. The Toffees, making the short journey across the River Mersey, were twice in front through Steven Naismith and Leon Osman but Tranmere responded courtesy of Cole Stockton's chipped finish and James Rowe's late leveler.

Against non-league opponents, Stevenage saw off Tonbridge Angels 3-1 with new signing Adam Marriott grabbing one of the goals for Graham Westley's men, while Gillingham breezed past Dartford, 4-0.

Last season's Conference Premier Play-Off winners, Cambridge United, struggled though against Boreham Wood in a 0-0 stalemate at Meadow Park.
