No Blackburn Rovers deal for Lucas Neill

21 February 2014

Australia captain Lucas Neill's international future is in doubt after Blackburn Rovers manager Gary Bowyer confirmed he will not be offering the defender a contract.

The 35-year-old had been training with the Championship club but he has left in order to gain regular playing time.

The Socceroos skipper, who played for Blackburn between 2001 and 2007, will hope to find a club quickly to ensure he gains a place in Australia's World Cup squad.

Bowyer told the Lancashire Telegraph: "Lucas Neill was training with us and he played in a reserve game and now he is not training with us.

"If there was something that could have come of it we might have done something but at the same time we were aware of the fact that if someone else comes in for him or if he wants to try something else to get in the World Cup squad then that would be his goal.

"We were helping Lucas out with training but the World Cup is his goal and he has got an opportunity to play in that and everyone would want to play in that.

"Different people are interested in him and that is where he is at the moment."
