Johnstone's Paint Trophy Area Finals first leg preview

4 February 2014

Northern Section Area Final first leg

Fleetwood Town v Chesterfield

Two of Sky Bet League 2's high-flyers meet at Highbury in the Northern Area Final first leg, with Fleetwood Town hosting Chesterfield on Tuesday night.

The Cod Army are fourth in the League 2 table, while Chesterfield sit at the summit, six points better off.

And it's the Spireites who approach the game on the better form, with three successive wins in an unbeaten four-match run. Fleetwood won four on the bounce in a five-game undefeated spell, before suffering a 2-1 defeat against York City at the weekend.

To get to this stage of the Trophy, Fleetwood have impressively overcome four Sky Bet League 1 teams, in Tranmere Rovers, Crewe Alexandra, Carlisle United and Rotherham United.

Chesterfield, meanwhile, who won the Trophy in the 2011/12 season, received a First Round bye and then beat Mansfield Town, Rochdale and Oldham Athletic.

These two have met three times with the head-to-head record reading one win apiece, and a draw.

Chesterfield beat Swindon Town 2-0 in the 2012 Final, a contest which could be repeated this year

Southern Section Area Final first leg

Peterborough United v Swindon Town

On Wednesday, attention turns to the Southern Area Final first leg when Peterborough United host Swindon Town in an all-Sky Bet League 1 affair.

Both teams are pushing for promotion to the Sky Bet Championship and sit side-by-side in the standings - Posh are seventh on 45 points and Swindon are eighth on 41.

This will be the third meeting between the pair following a 1-0 win for Darren Ferguson's men on the opening day of the 2013/14 season, before the Robins were 2-1 winners at the County Ground last month.

To get to this stage, Posh were handed a First Round bye before triumphing over Brentford, Dagenham and Redbridge and Newport County.

Mark Cooper's men also began in the Second Round where they saw off Plymouth Argyle, following that up with a win against Wycombe Wanderers and a penalty shootout victory over Stevenage.

Peterborough have never reached the Final of this competition, whereas Swindon reached Wembley in 2012 where they lost 2-0 to Chesterfield.
