Final Third Development League Digest 27/02/14

27 February 2014

This week has been busier than most in the Final Third Development League, both on and off the field, with six matches contested and a celebrity appearance.

In the East Division on Wednesday, One Direction star Louis Tomlinson made his Doncaster Rovers debut when coming on as a second-half substitute in their 0-0 draw with Rotherham United in front of over 5,000 fans at the Keepmoat Stadium.

On the same night, Scunthorpe United were unable to lift themselves off the bottom of the table despite running out 3-0 winners at second-placed Mansfield Town. Etienne Esajas grabbed a brace for the Iron, scoring either side of a Callum Howe strike.

That defeat for the Stags denied them the chance to move above table-toppers Hull City, who remain one point clear with two matches left to play for both clubs. Rotherham's point lifted them into third, above Hartlepool, while Doncaster and Scunthorpe lie fifth and sixth respectively, separated by goal difference.

There was a full programme in the West Division with all eight teams in action. The fixtures began on Tuesday lunchtime when Tranmere Rovers and Morecambe contested a 1-1 drawat Kirklands. That was followed by two more stalemates 24 hours later; George Edmondson scored a late goal for Oldham Athletic as they held Shrewsbury Town, 2-2, while Port Vale's clash with Wrexham finished 0-0.

The stand-out game saw the competition's top-scorers Walsall host leaders Wigan Athletic, and it was the Saddlers who triumphed 1-0 thanks to a Danny Griffiths goal. That victory pushed Walsall into second on 18 points, one point behind the Latics who have a game in hand. Wrexham are third, on 17 points.

Port Vale are fourth, ahead of Morecambe, Oldham, Shrewsbury and then Tranmere.

No games took place in the Final Third Development League Cup this week. Leicester City and Mansfield Town have already qualified for the Semi-Finals; Wigan and Hartlepool United need just a point from their final matches to join them in the last four.
