Matt Smith and Jay Emmanuel-Thomas kept Bristol City top of the Sky Bet League 1 table with a 2-1 Boxing Day victory over west country rivals Yeovil Town at Ashton Gate.

Smith headed home and Emmanuel-Thomas added a cheeky second from the penalty spot, with Ben Nugent replying for the Glovers.

Milton Keynes Dons, Swindon Town and Preston North End all kept the pressure on with victories of their own.

The Dons secured a 1-0 win at Notts County thanks to Daniel Powell, while Paul Gallagher's penalty gave Preston a third successive 1-0 victory in all competitions against Barnsley.

Swindon hit Walsall with three quick-fire goals in the second half to seal a 4-1 victory - Andy Williams adding a brace to goals from Michael Smith and Massimo Luongo.

Leyton Orient recorded only their second home league win of the season with a 4-1 victory against Crawley Town to move out of the relegation zone.

Two goals from Chris Dagnall and one apiece for Dean Cox and David Mooney saw Crawley replace their opponents in the bottom four.

Crewe Alexandra's 10 men earned a 2-1 victory at Oldham Athletic to make it back-to-back wins in their fight against relegation, while Coventry City's problems deepened as they had two men sent off in a 2-0 defeat at Doncaster Rovers.

Andy Butler and Harry Forrester were on target as Rovers recorded only a second home win of the season.

Chesterfield held off a Peterborough United fight back to leapfrog their opponents with a 3-2 victory at the Proact Stadium, and Dany N'Guessan scored a late penalty to secure Port Vale a 2-1 victory over 10-man Sheffield United.

James Hanson and Filipe Morais scored the goals as Bradford City claimed a 2-0 win over Fleetwood Town, a late goal from leading scorer Paddy Madden fired Scunthorpe United to a 2-1 win against Rochdale, and Gillingham won 2-1 at struggling Colchester United.
