Johnstone's Paint Trophy Area Semi-Final review

11 December 2014

John Egan scored the only goal of the game for Gillingham to send them into the Johnstone's Paint Trophy Southern Area Final at the expense of Leyton Orient.

The game looked to be heading for extra-time before defender Egan rose highest from a Michael Doughty corner in the 79th minute to head past O's goalkeeper Adam Legzdins.

That was his third goal in two games and it sealed the Gills' place in the Area Final, where they will go up against Bristol City, who got the better of Coventry City 2-0.

Derrick Williams got the ball rolling for the Robins with a first-half header, before Aaron Wilbraham secured their victory and their place in the Southern Area Final in the second period.

Walsall produced a spirited comeback to eliminate Tranmere Rovers on penalties in a Johnstone's Paint Trophy shoot-out win which keeps alive their hopes of making a maiden Wembley voyage.

The Saddlers were 2-0 down at half-time as Rovers led through goals from Max Power and Kayode Odejayi, but they fought back in the second period with Anthony Forde and Michael Cain on target, as the game ended 2-2 after 90 minutes.

Although Ashley Grimes' spot-kick was saved, Liam Ridehalgh hit the crossbar for Rovers before Marc Laird missed to allow Paul Downing to send Dean Smith's men through to the Northern Area Final courtesy of a 5-4 success.
