Sky Bet League 2 round-up

16 August 2014

We take a look at the weekend's action in Sky Bet League 2

Portsmouth showed plenty of spirit to beat Cambridge United 2-1 in Sky Bet League 2 on Saturday in front of a crowd of 16,671 at Fratton Park.

Pompey had Adam Webster sent off after going ahead through Ryan Taylor but doubled their advantage via a Chris Dunn own goal and held on for victory despite Kwesi Appiah pulling one back.

There was another healthy attendance at Plymouth Argyle as Tyler Harvey, Reuben Reid and Curtis Nelson thrilled the majority of the 11,418 present in a 3-0 defeat of local rivals Exeter City.

Burton Albion continued their good start to the season when following up a Capital One Cup win over Wigan Athletic by making it six points in two league games with a 2-1 triumph over Dagenham & Redbridge, with Billy Kee bagging a late brace as Albion came from behind to prevail.

Southend United can also boast a 100 per cent record in this division after Myles Weston and Ben Coker struck in a 2-0 home win over Stevenage, while Cheltenham Town are other early pacesetters as Byron Harrison and Koby Arthur scored in a 2-1 home victory over Accrington Stanley, who missed a penalty deep into stoppage time.

Kevin Ellison netted a double and Paul Mullin added another as Morecambe came from 2-0 down to beat Newport County 3-2 at the Globe Arena, while Wycombe Wanderers are on six points too after Aaron Pierre, Paul Hayes and Peter Murphy hit the net in a 3-1 defeat of Carlisle United, who had Alex Marrow dismissed.

Big-spending Bury bounced back from an opening-day loss to oblige 2-0 at Hartlepool United, with Danny Rose and Daniel Nardiello on the scoresheet, while Matt Tubbs got the only goal of the game as AFC Wimbledon upset Luton Town at Kenilworth Road.

Ryan Tafazolli and Adam Murray scored either side of a Danny Hylton penalty as Mansfield Town beat Oxford United 2-1, while Shrewsbury Town pulled off a remarkable late comeback to edge out Tranmere Rovers by the same scoreline, with Andy Mangan equalising in the 90th minute and then Mickey Demetrious hitting the winner deep into stoppage time.

There was also late drama as York City and Northampton Town drew 1-1 at Bootham Crescent, with Marc Richards getting the leveller for the visitors in the last minute of normal time.
