Capital One Cup Round 3 draw highlights

28 August 2014

Following the draw for the Capital One Cup Round 3, we look at some of the stand-out ties

The seven English teams in European competition this season entered the Capital One Cup for Round 3 and the draw threw out six all-Premier League ties.

Two-time winners Arsenal, who lost the Final in 2011, will host Southampton in a repeat of the 2003 FA Cup final, while Everton boss Roberto Martinez will return to his former employers when the Toffees make the trip to Swansea City.

Manchester City begin the defence of their 2013/14 crown with a home tie against Sky Bet Championship opposition Sheffield Wednesday, who knocked out top-flight Burnley in Round 2.

Another exciting Premier League versus Championship match-up pits Tottenham Hostpur against Nottingham Forest, who competed the 1991/92 League Cup Semi-Finals. The pair will be coming together for the first time in almost 10 years.

However, attention in the Third Round will firmly be on the two teams from Sky Bet League 2 who have made it to this stage.

Burton Albion, who have already beaten Wigan Athletic and Queens Park Rangers in the Cup, will host Championship side Brighton and Hove Albion in the first ever meeting between the two sides.

Shrewsbury Town, conquerors of Blackpool and Leicester City, have been rewarded with a home tie against Norwich City. The Shrews haven’t overcome the Canaries since 1960, also in this competition, and have won only four compared to Norwich’s 16 in their head-to-head record.

Two Sky Bet League 1 teams are guaranteed to make it into the hat for Round 4, with Milton Keynes Dons paired against Bradford City. Both those sides were featured on Sky Sports in the Second Round, with MK Dons outplaying Manchester United and Bradford edging out Leeds in front of the cameras.

Elsewhere, Leyton Orient will host Sheffield United, after both teams got the better of Premier League opposition in Round 2. The O’s navigated their way past Aston Villa, winning 1-0, while the Blades triumphed on penalties against West Ham United.

All these ties are due to take place during the week commencing 22nd September 2014.
