York City's fantastic run of form in April has been rewarded, with boss Nigel Worthington and defender Chris Smith being named as the winners of the npower League 2 Manager of the Month and Player of the Month respectively.
At the start of April, any two of eight teams could have lost their npower Football League status, so good form at the bottom of the table was vital. Nigel Worthington's York City had a fantastic month, going undefeated with four wins and a draw from their last five fixtures to ensure they remained in League 2 next season.
In addition to his strong play and leadership under manager Worthington, Chris Smith made a vital last-minute goal-line clearance in the 2-1 win over Southend United and then scored the only goal against Dagenham and Redbridge.
Speaking about Worthington's win, panel member Alan Curbishley said: "There's no denying that Nigel has made a fantastic impact since joining York. Four key wins in the month were vital in retaining his side's Football League status and now they can look to next season with confidence."
Commenting from npower, Partnership and Sponsorship Manager Katy Thomas added: "The bottom of npower League 2 was extraordinarily tight in the closing weeks of the season. Both in the dugout and on the pitch, York had an inspired month and ended up securing their Football League status in some style."
