Plenty of positives for Ward

3 March 2013

Bristol Rovers boss John Ward joined in the acclaim for teenage winger Ellis Harrison after an exciting home debut in the club's impressive 3-0 win over promotion-chasing Burton.

The 19-year-old's contribution included an assist for the Pirates' third goal scored by Eliot Richards in a comprehensive victory. Earlier strikes from Ryan Brunt and John-Joe O'Toole had put the result beyond doubt on an off-day for the visitors.

Ward said: "I see Ellis every day in training so I know what he can do. I had no fears at all about him handling playing in front of our fans. He is a very exciting player in the making and we have to look after him. But I'm pleased with the whole team because we have put a top three side to the sword.

"I was pleased with the clean sheet, but even happier with the three goals because we haven't always been reaping the rewards for our efforts in recent games.

"Good sides are now starting to treat us with respect, But I won't allow complacency to set in as there is a long way to go until the end of the season."

Brunt's side-footed finish from a Joe Anyinsah cross gave Rovers a sixth-minute lead, which they doubled courtesy of a close-range shot from O'Toole just after the hour mark. Richards then lashed home Harrison's perfect cut back from the byline after 70 minutes to confirm his side's dominance.

However, Burton boss Gary Rowett refused to be too downcast at his team's punchless effort.

"We started slowly and to be honest Rovers could have been further ahead early on," he said. "In the latter part of the first half we got back into it and felt we might have had a penalty for a foul on Billy Kee, as well as creating a couple of chances.

"Overall, we weren't at our best. But all the top sides are struggling to put results together at the moment and we knew there would be setbacks along the way.

"There will be more over the last 10 games, but what we need is to produce our best form often enough to get the necessary points."
