Coyle keen to hang on to Maloney

17 June 2013

New Wigan manager Owen Coyle has underlined his wish to keep Shaun Maloney at the DW Stadium.

Maloney was one of a number of Latics players to impress as they sealed FA Cup glory last term, but the club's subsequent relegation from the Barclays Premier League is likely to make hanging on to such prized assets difficult.

Coyle, who was appointed as Roberto Martinez's successor on Friday, has been quick to state his admiration for the 30-year-old Scotland international.

He told the Daily Record: "Shaun is my type of player and I've thought that since the first time I clapped eyes on him as a kid at Celtic.

"I love him to bits because he's a match-winner and that's what makes him an attractive proposition to others at the same time.

"Wigan have suffered a big blow due to the loss of their Premier League status and all of the Scottish lads, not forgetting Gary Caldwell, can be a big help to me."
