Holdsworth rues Shots mistakes

13 February 2013

Aldershot manager Dean Holdsworth bemoaned his side's error-strewn performance after watching them fall to a 2-1 defeat at Morecambe.

A late Oliver Risser own goal sent Morecambe on their way to victory, before the midfielder's misfortune was compounded by a Gary McDonald strike and Danny Hylton scored a last-minute consolation.

He said: "The table doesn't lie and at the moment it shows we have not been good enough. I have a good, honest bunch of players who I trust, but we keep making important mistakes at wrong times and keep getting punished.

"Tonight we looked strong but then gave away a sloppy first goal because we didn't mark like we should at a set piece and got punished. That meant we had to chase the game and we got caught out for a second goal. We work hard in training not to make those mistakes but we keep making them and that has to stop."

A drab game came to life in the closing stages as the home side were gifted the opening goal on 71 minutes - Aldershot midfielder Oliver Risser heading a Stewart Drummond lay off past his own goalkeeper from six yards out.

The struggling Shots then left gaps as they chased a much-needed point and were made to pay as the home side doubled their advantage after 85 minutes. Ryan Williams' shot from the edge of the area was superbly saved by Jamie Young but the ball rebounded into the path of Morecambe midfielder Gary McDonald, who dived to head home from close range.

Danny Hylton gave the Shots some consolation with a 92nd-minute goal after a neat exchange of passes on the edge of the Morecambe area, but the home side hung on for victory.

Morecambe boss Jim Bentley said he was delighted with the three points which he felt took his side further towards League 2 safety.

He said: "It wasn't a classic game by any means but it was a vital win as it took us 12 points clear of Aldershot and past the 40-point mark which is always a confidence booster.

"It was a scrappy game, but we kept our cool and got the first goal which is all important in this league as the stats show time and time again. We were all disappointed after the defeat here on Saturday, but I asked for a reaction and I got one with a good, solid and disciplined performance."
