Whittingham joins Crawley

13 December 2013

Former Portsmouth manager Guy Whittingham has joined Sky Bet League One outfit Crawley as a first-team coach.

The 49-year-old links up with Town boss John Gregory, who took Whittingham to Fratton Park when he was in charge of Pompey in 1989.

The former Aston Villa and Sheffield Wednesday forward is looking forward to getting started with the Reds.

He told the club's official website: "I'm delighted to be here working at such an ambitious and progressive football club.

"One of the attractions was working with the Gaffer again. I guess I owe my professional career to him because he paid ?450 to buy me out of the Army all those years ago.

"A lot has happened since then but I was keen to come in and work with John again. Obviously I have had my own experience of management so I know what it's like but it's great to be here.

"I know a few of the lads and I watched the Bristol Rovers game last Saturday so I know that we have a very talented squad.

"I'm really looking forward to tomorrow's game. Football is all about momentum. You can see we have a good team spirit already and that can take us a long way."

Gregory is hopeful Whittingham can use his knowledge and experience to help the club's strikers start firing.

He said: "He knows the lower divisions very well and he works hard and he's a very good coach. Being a manager is a huge responsibility so he won't have that and he can focus on making some good players even better.

"In particular, he will be working with our strikers. We have a problem scoring goals and I want him to transfer his knowledge onto our forwards in particular. Initially he will spend some time on that side of our game.

"He is a quality individual who will do everything in his power to improve Crawley Town FC."
