Sky Bet League 2 Boxing Day preview

24 December 2013

Accrington Stanley v York City

York City are fast becoming Sky Bet League 2's draw specialists and travel to Accrington Stanley on Boxing Day.

The Minstermen secured a respectable 0-0 draw with Oxford United at the weekend and that was their fourth stalemate on the spin, and their ninth overall this term.

After back-to-back defeats, Stanley recorded a dramatic 3-2 triumph at Mansfield Town last Saturday to rise to 17th.

AFC Wimbledon v Southend United

AFC Wimbledon are winless in four and host Southend United, who are without a victory in three.

The Wombles have drawn three of their last four, while Southend have drawn two of their last three. Both were involved in stalemates last time out, against Mansfield and Rochdale respectively.

Southend have triumphed in four of the five meetings between the pair, but AFC Wimbledon were the victors in the most recent clash, in March.

Burton Albion v Northampton Town

Northampton Town begin life after Aidy Boothroyd with a trip to Burton Albion.

The Cobblers lost 4-1 at home to Wycombe Wanderers last Saturday, which saw them slip back to the foot of the division, and Boothroyd departed the club soon after the full-time whistle.

Andy King has been placed in temporary charge of the club and his first task is against a fifth-place Brewers side unbeaten in five and just two points adrift of an automatic promotion place.

Aidy Boothroyd left Northampton Town last Saturday, just months after leading the club to the League 2 Play-Off Final

Bury v Scunthorpe United

Northampton are now joined in the relegation zone by Bury and they entertain in-form Scunthorpe United.

A 2-1 loss to Plymouth Argyle, coupled with Torquay United's victory at Dagenham and Redbridge, saw the Shakers slip to 23rd, while the Iron registered their fourth win in five to move into the top three.

Current form firmly points to an away win and if Scunthorpe duly oblige, it'll be their first victory against Bury since 2005. They've lost three of the four encounters since.

Cheltenham Town v Exeter City

Cheltenham Town possess Sky Bet League 2's longest unbeaten record and welcome the visit of Exeter City.

The 11th-placed Robins haven't lost in 10 matches, with their 2-0 victory at Fleetwood Town the latest of their impressive results. They've only won twice at home, though.

Exeter are one point below Cheltenham and have only one victory in nine. They've met the Robins eight times, losing on every occasion, scoring just three goals in that stretch of encounters.

Chesterfield v Hartlepool United

New Sky Bet League 2 leaders Chesterfield are at home to Hartlepool United.

The Spireites' 2-0 success against Exeter was their second victory on the bounce and saw them go one clear of Oxford United, who could only muster a draw.

Hartlepool have drawn three games in succession and lost 6-1 when they last made the trip to Chesterfield, in last season's FA Cup.

Morecambe v Fleetwood Town

Ninth-placed Morecambe go head-to-head with Fleetwood Town, who are fourth, in an all-Lancashire clash at the Globe Arena.

Both teams are on inconsistent runs, collecting seven points each in their last six, through two wins, three losses and one draw.

They've only ever met twice, both games coming last term, and the Cod Army completed a comfortable double without conceding a goal.

Oxford United v Plymouth Argyle

Oxford United's quest to regain top spot in Sky Bet League 2 starts at the Kassam Stadium against John Sheridan's Plymouth Argyle.

The U's are undefeated in six but three draws in four games has seen them slip to second, prior to their match with the Pilgrims, who they haven't lost to since 2002.

Plymouth have collected only eight points from their two matches on the road, winning just two. They overcame Bury last time out to move up to 16th.

Portsmouth v Dagenham and Redbridge

Portsmouth and Dagenham and Redbridge have both suffered back-to-back defeats and the pair meet at Fratton Park.

The Daggers have lost to Oxford and Torquay to slide down to 10th, while Pompey have been defeated by Newport County and Bristol Rovers to be sucked to within two points of the relegation zone.

This will be the first meeting ever between the two clubs.

Rochdale v Mansfield Town

Rochdale have collected 22 of their 34 points on home soil and entertain Sky Bet League 2's out-of-form team, Mansfield.

Keith Hill's Dale have notched seven wins at Spotland but haven't won in four, leading them to slip to eighth.

Mansfield's plummet down the standings continued last weekend after they suffered a heartbreaking last minute-reverse against Accrington. They led Stanley 2-1 going into injury-time, but ended up losing 3-2 - their 12th game without a victory.

Wycombe Wanderers v Newport County

Wycombe Wanderers ended their poor run with a win at Northampton on Saturday, and on Boxing Day face Newport County.

The Chairboys won at Northampton for their first three-pointer in eight outings. County were also winners in their most recent match, against Portsmouth, to maintain a place in the Play-Offs.

Wycombe have only notched three home wins, while County have only picked up two victories on the road, ahead of what will be the first clash between the two.

Torquay United v Bristol Rovers

Goals are guaranteed at Plainmoor on Boxing Day, with Torquay United locking horns with Bristol Rovers.

Only two of their 74 meetings have ended goalless with 11 goals being shared between the duo last term. Rovers have the upper hand in the overall record with 34 wins, compared to Torquay's 22.

John Ward's side beat Portsmouth 2-0 to move up to 18th last time out and Torquay moved out of the bottom two with their second win in as many matches, against Dagenham.
