We got lucky - McCarthy

7 April 2013

Ipswich manager Mick McCarthy admitted his team were guilty of a smash-and-grab raid on Pride Park after a late Carlos Edwards strike earned the visitors a vital 1-0 npower Championship win over Derby County.

The Rams missed a penalty for the third game in a row - they have now failed from their last four spot-kicks - before Edwards burst forward to lift Ipswich six points clear of the relegation zone.

But McCarthy said: "We burgled it. I thought I heard the sirens and I said 'shut the doors, the police are coming!' Did we deserve the three points? Not on that performance because they were better than us.

"We saved a penalty and had to stick at it because we've not played particularly well, but it was a bit of quality at the end - it was a great strike. He's 34, Carlos. He's stayed on the pitch and run his socks off and then produces that.

"Derby have played well at times and they were the better team, but it won't say in the history books how we've played - it will say we came here and won. We worked hard, we've fought our corner and we got lucky today.

"The players have been fabulous. That spirit has been right through the club since I've been here, and without that we'd have been out of the league now. They deserve a huge amount of credit for that.

"Derby boss Nigel Clough revealed he will be nominating a new penalty taker, with Jamie Ward and Conor Sammon have now missed two spot-kicks each.

"That's the last four, so we will certainly look at changing our taker now. When you miss one, you don't mind but when they miss two consecutively... we will change our penalty taker.

"It's a highly unusual stat to miss four on the spin - incredible, really. Me and Andy Garner (Derby coach) are fighting over the next one! We will have a chat with the lads and sort it out. Someone will stand up. There's no shortage of volunteers for it - two or three fancy it.

"We didn't start as brightly at home as we have been doing but once we got into our stride we played some great stuff and if we score the penalty we come in at 1-0 and take it on from there and could have won the game comfortably."
