Paul Taylor has been ruled out for at least six weeks with a broken bone in his foot.
The Ipswich striker will hope to avoid an operation but should the bone not heal and surgery be required then he will be sidelined for a much longer period.
The news will come as a huge blow to struggling Ipswich, who are also without Michael Chopra due to a thigh strain as they look to turn their season around.
Boss Paul Jewell told the club's official website: "We have been told there are two scenarios, he might need an operation is one and if that is the case it will be a long-term injury.
"The other possibility is that he is out for six to eight weeks and we see how his recovery goes. The specialist has said we should go down that route first.
"Obviously we want to avoid surgery if possible but it will be down to if the injury heals during that timeframe. If it does then great, if it doesn't then he will be missing for much longer than six weeks."
