Millers response pleases Raynor

30 September 2012

Assistant manager Paul Raynor was relieved to see Rotherham return to winning ways following their 3-1 victory over Oxford.

The visitors grabbed a shock eighth-minute lead when Sean Rigg fired home through a crowded penalty area after a cleverly worked short corner but Rotherham came back strongly and hit the woodwork twice before Michael O'Connor levelled from the penalty spot after 28 minutes and then added a second.

Substitute Jason Taylor put the icing on the cake with two minutes to go by grabbing Rotherham's third, but they were also reliant on a late double save from goalkeeper Scott Shearer.

Raynor, standing in for banned manager Steve Evans, said: "It would have been an absolute travesty if we hadn't taken all three points. We totally deserved it."

He also reserved praise for man-of-the-match O'Connor.

"He's an international and we knew what he could bring to the team," said Raynor. "He's as fit as he's ever been. We've seen what he can do in the final third and he's got a hell of a shot on him. I am sure there are more goals to come from him."

Oxford have now lost six league games on the trot and assistant manager Micky Lewis said: "The last couple of minutes summed it up for us.

"We had two really good chances to score, and fair enough, their keeper made two good saves, but they then go on the break and score. We made quite a few changes and we have seen signs. We are obviously a bit disappointed even though we were playing one of the best teams in the league and they are expected to be up there at the end if not win it.

"They have a good squad. They have plenty to choose from and they are pretty fit whereas we are still trying to get people back fit.

"When you lose so many games on the bounce sometimes you have to make changes and if we had had more fit players, we might have made more changes. It was a much better performance, but it is still six defeats on the spin. We have to win the next one."
