Boothroyd hails 'fantastic' Nicholls

30 September 2012

Aidy Boothroyd heaped praise on summer signing Alex Nicholls after he rescued a point for Northampton in a six-goal thriller at Burton.

Nicholls floated a perfectly-judged shot into the far corner in the 83rd minute - just when it seemed the hosts would record their fourth win in five games.

The Cobblers boss said: "The goal that got us the draw was as good as any I've seen. I thought it was a fantastic finish by Alex. He's got that ability and does exactly the same in training. He works his socks off for the team, he's quick and athletic and he scores goals with both feet and his head."

Boothroyd added: "He's in a real purple patch at the moment and we've just got to make sure we keep it going."

Calvin Zola had put Burton in front in the ninth minute with his fifth goal of the season and the lead was doubled early in the second half when Cobblers skipper Kelvin Langmead turned a Billy Kee cross into his own net.

However, Langmead quickly made amends by heading home Ishmel Demontagnac's free kick to reduce the deficit four minutes later.

David Artell struck in a goalmouth scramble to bring the scores level in the 77th minute. Skipper Zander Diamond headed Burton back in front in the 80th minute but it was Nicholls who had the final say.

Brewers boss Gary Rowett said: "I wouldn't want a game like that every week. It was a bit of roller coaster to say the least. We did terrifically well in the first half with a good controlled performance, but losing Calvin Zola with an injury was a big blow and turned the tide somewhat.

"I'm disappointed in a way to concede the two goals that let them back into it, but I also thought we showed a lot of character to go 3-2 up. Once they made it 3-3, I think I was happy to see the draw if I'm honest.

"I think we invited them to put the ball into the area they wanted it to go and I think we invited them to put lots of bodies into our box to cause us problems. Again, though, I thought we showed some real good resolve to get ourselves back in front and we went mightily close to making it 4-2."
