Beek's 27 years of service recognised

13 September 2012

Wycombe Wanderers' joint-chairman Ivor Beeks MBE JP received a Long Service Award from The Football League at Adams Park on Saturday.

Presented by League chairman Greg Clarke, Beeks was recognised for his 27 years of service - 25 as chairman - to Wycombe Wanderers Football Club.

The award tops off a great few months for the 70-year-old, who was honoured in the Queen's June Birthday Honours list for services to football and the community in High Wycombe.

"I would like to thank The Football League for the award," Beeks said. "It's an honour and I'm very proud to receive it, but it's not just for me, it's for every person I've worked with in the past 27 years.

"Keith Allen [former club secretary] and Brian Kane [director] deserve a special mention because they've been alongside me for a large chunk of that period."

He added: "I am a very lucky man to have received this award and an MBE in the space of a few months."

Greg Clarke said: "It was a great pleasure to be at Saturday's match to present Ivor with his long service award. It is well deserved.

"Across 27 years he has made a tremendous contribution to Wycombe Wanderers and has seen the club enjoy the most successful period in its 125-year history. He has also given sterling service to the wider game, having been elected by his fellow clubs to the board of The Football League and various FA Committees."

After two years as a director, Beeks stepped up to chairman in 1987 and oversaw the club's rise into The Football League under the tutelage of the man he appointed, Martin O'Neill.

"There's been a lot of peaks and troughs, but far more peaks. We've had success at Wembley on a number of occasions and been to two major cup semi-finals," Beeks added.

"We've achieved a lot in 27 years - the main one being the club moving from non-league into The Football League."

He concluded: "I've had one hell of a time and enjoyed working with the Wycombe Wanderers team immensely.

"I welcomed the Trust into the club and wish them every the success for the future. They know I'm here for them should they need any advice or experience."
