Spireites target Cook

Accrington have given npower League Two rivals Chesterfield permission to speak to Paul Cook with a view to naming him as their new manager.

The Spireites have been looking for a new boss since John Sheridan left the club at the end of August, with Tommy Wright currently looking after first-team duties on a caretaker basis.

But Chesterfield have now identified Cook as a suitable replacement after agreeing compensation with Stanley on Wednesday night.

A Chesterfield statement said: "Chesterfield have been given permission to hold talks with Accrington Stanley boss Paul Cook over the vacant managerial position at the club.

"The Spireites were given the go-ahead to speak to Cook after agreeing compensation with their League Two rivals.

"Tommy Wright has been in caretaker charge at the Proact Stadium since the departure of John Sheridan at the end of August."
