Mackay keeps his feet on the ground

28 October 2012

Cardiff manager Malky Mackay refused to get carried away despite seeing his side return to the top of the npower Championship following their emphatic 4-0 home victory over Burnley.

Joe Mason, Craig Noone, Matt Connolly and Aron Gunnarsson all scored as the Welsh club notched up their biggest win in just over two years.

But Cardiff manager Mackay, whose side regained their spot at the summit after Leicester's slip-up at home to Crystal Palace, kept a lid on the growing expectancy in south Wales.

Mackay said: "I'm delighted that after 12 games we're in and around what is going on.

"But I'm acutely aware how relentless and unforgiving this league is as well as how quickly your squad can be decimated by injuries.

"We have had some injuries in the form of Nicky Maynard, Craig Bellamy, Jordon Mutch and Tommy Smith. But other players have come in and grabbed the jerseys."

Burnley caretaker manager Terry Pashley said: "The goals we conceded were self-inflicted.

"After the first goal we never really recovered. We tried to be positive in the second half to try and get the next goal, but we conceded a third.

"It was poor decisions in open play and we got punished. But we all have to be accountable.

"Cardiff are top of the league and it's no fluke - they are playing consistent football. It was a tough afternoon for us."
